Whiskey reviews are an absolute necessity to building an audience, both consumer and wholesaler. Without respectable sources helping guide would-be customers, it's just your word vs nobody's. And whether you like it or not, people need comparison. Consumers want to know how any product is better, or at least different, than a competitor's.

There are many sources for ratings, competitions, review, and the like. Who you want speaking or writing about your product reflects the audience being targeted. In this case, Onyx & Amber are after legitimacy, and BreakingBourbon.com offers that. For the hardcore whiskey consumer base, this website offers a true depth of knowledge of the liquid, pays no mind to the presentation of bottle or label, and really dissects the whiskey into a ratings system that seems impossible to get a top score. When we received 4 barrels for the pictured whiskey, messages really did come in from industry cohorts offering kinds words and congratulations!

Each rating, competition, etc has its own place in how you market your product, and much of it comes down to timing. In this case, we knew it would be a 2-3 month turnaround from submission (it was two months), whereas the results from an annual competition like San Francisco World Spirits Comp aren't released until April/May.

Who do you want to hear about your whiskey, and more importantly, do you have a calendar of when they're going to hear your messaging based on your annual marketing budget?
